Cool, I went there a year and a half ago.

Rio is a fascinating city, make sure you visit the Copacabana Beach & the other beaches in town (Leblon, Ipanema...). Go to the Sugarloaf & visit the Cristo Corcovado & the Cathedral. Make sure you eat a Churrascaria -a Brazilian typical restaurant/buffet where you're served different kinds of meat on swords-. Copacabana beach & the Sugarloaf are safe (the city is not that dangerous) though taking precautions in the rest of the city is good (especially in downtown Rio -don't go there at night but go, there is a place called Cafe de Colon or something which is worth a visit, it gets scary (downtown Rio, not the Cafe de Colon)- & the Sambodromo). If you have time visit the nearby town of Petropolis, really nice. I went to Rio for about 4 days, enough time to visit the city & its surroundings. The Plataforma show is good but not awsome, and the Maracana stadium is quite an interesting place you just can't miss. Take care & you'll have a nice trip (I really did enjoy Rio)

Well, I'm not from Rio, I'm from Curitiba, a city about 600 miles south of it. But I have been there several times. So, I can give you some suggestions and tips.

1) Rio is a giant city, with about 8 million inhabitants. If you are from a giant city, or have ever been to one (like London, Paris or New York), you know that it's better to pay attention to things like heavy traffic and urban violence, for example. Stay away from poor neighbourhoods.Try not to be showy, using jewelry, expensive watch clocks, or a big camera around your neck.

2) Do not think that all girls are prostitutes only because they use small bikinies. Of course there are prostitutes, but the case is that almost all girls in Rio, prostitutes or not, like to expose their bodies, and this is not only famous in Brazil, but around the world. Anyway, they generally do not do that because are willing to have sex with the first guy that appears, but because there is a strong body culture in Rio.

3) If you want girls, try to get tanned. Girls generally do not like pale guys in Rio.

4) The best beaches are Ipanema, Leblon, Barra da Tijuca, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, and Prainha. Renting a car is good, because public transportation is not good.

5) Go to the Corcovado, Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf), Tijuca National Park, MAM (Museu de Arte Moderna), MHN (Museu Historico Nacional), Forte de Copacabana, and Jardim Botanico are very cool experiences. Dowtown is pretty interesting, but it is a bit dirty and not really save.

6) Try not to be alone.

7) Near Rio there are several other places to go, which are very nice: Angra dos Reis, Ilha Grande, Parati, Petropolis, Teresopolis, Saquarema, Buzios, Bocaina National Park, Serra dos Orgaos National Park.

Enjoy!

You're right when you said Rio is a superficial place. Besides cariocas are usually a pain in the ***. Rio is a dangerous city, has the largest slum of America Latina (called Rocinha) and the carioca men aren't so good looking as the gaúchos (people from Rio Grande do Sul). You should try to move to Porto Alegre, one of the best brazilian cities and non-superficial city as Rio.

You must: Take the gondola to the top of Sugarloaf.

You must: Go to a Brazilian Churrasco steakhouse.

You must: Drink Caipariñas.

You must: Go to Maracaña. The largest stadium on earth. Pay the extra fee for the "protected area" at a soccer match.

Do NOT bring back crafts that are not flat. Rio is known for inserting contraband into sculptures etc, then selling your name to the cops so they can arrest you.

get a yellow fever shot first of all, cant be too careful. then what i did was hire a helicopter for $200USD and he takes you around the whole of Rio, including a fly-by of Christ passed Copacabana and even over the worlds largest football stadium, the maracana. i was only there for a day, but we go back for an overnight soon, its really cool, be careful as taxis charge like $40USD to Copacabana

Hey man!! Just show up. Whatever you're into, they're into. You won't have to go far to be at a beach, so be into that. Try Ipanema or Leblon beaches. After that, turn three times, point and go.Good advise, watch your wallet and don't wear jewlery.
